Jaffna Public Library. Opened in 1933, it grew to become one of the largest libraries in Asia with over 97,000 books, including many important historical documents on Sri Lanka’s political history.

The Jaffna Public Library. Opened in 1933, it grew to become one of the largest libraries in Asia with over 97,000 books, including many important historical documents on Sri Lanka’s political history. In 1981 it was set on fire amid mob violence, completely destroying the collection, making it one of the worst cases of political book burning in history. After extensive restoration, the library reopened in 2001, but without much of its original collection.
